What is gum disease?

Gum disease starts when plaque and tartar accumulate on the teeth. The bacteria irritate the gum tissue, which can recede over time. Left untreated, the bone supporting your teeth begins to break down — and teeth can eventually become loose or fall out.

Scaling and root planing

The most common non-surgical treatment is a deep cleaning called scaling and root planing. We carefully remove bacteria and infected tissue all the way down to the roots, then smooth the root surfaces so healthy tissue can reattach. The goal is to halt the disease and let your gums heal.

Why your whole body benefits

Untreated periodontal disease has been linked to several serious conditions — heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, respiratory problems, diabetes complications, and pregnancy complications. Treating your gums isn't just about your smile; it's about your overall health.
